As the Vice-Chair of the new Restorative Justice Committee, one of my top priorities is to improve our criminal justice system by passing legislation that will address the root cause of crime by placing an emphasis on rehabilitation instead of punishment. In the most recent session, I sponsored legislation that include an expansion of the type of non-violent felonies that can be sealed to allow greater access to employment for ex-offenders after a long period of having a clean record, an increase in the age of who is considered an adult from 17 to 18 for felony charges, an expansion of tax credits for businesses that hire ex-offenders, and improvements to Redeploy Illinois which supports alternatives to incarceration for youth. More still needs to be done and I am hopeful that this new committee will continue to yield positive results.
